AUDI RS5 !!!

rs5front.jpg

OMG…HOW HOT IS THAT!!!

Following Audi’s self imposed schedule of having only one RS model on the market at a time, deliveries of the brand new 573hp twin-turbo V10 RS 6 Avant are getting underway for 2008 as the B7 RS 4 ends its production. With RS cars typically having a two year life cycle, the next RS model is expected to debut in 2010 as MY 2011. The most likely candidate to take over from the RS 6 is the RS 5 Coupe since - by that time - it will be in the second half of it’s life cycle, although too early for the all-new B8 A4.

UNICA says 4th of July is the right time to end ethanol tariffs

Fourth of July equals fireworks, parades and, if the Brazilian sugarcane growers - represented by UNICA, the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association - get their way, a reduced or eliminated ethanol import tariff. UNICA is calling on the U.S. Congress to eliminate the 54-cent tariff on each imported gallon of ethanol. Doing so, they argue, would reduce the cost of using cars for U.S. drivers as UNICA's "Are We There Yet?" campaign will try to prove. After all, UNICA says, the ethanol tariff is a relic from 1980 and was never meant to be permanent anyway.

UNICA's website, which features the oh-so-subtle graphic seen above, doesn't highlight how badly American ethanol producers would be hurt by letting Brazilian ethanol flow more cheaply in U.S. pumps. Still, if cheaper gas is the result, then I'm sure not many drivers will really care where their fuel comes from (see also *cough* Wal-Mart *cough* China). Read more after the jump.

And Another One Gone: Ferrari 599 GTB, Greek-Style [Accidents]

The folks over at WreckedExotics bring word from Greece of another Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano on the scrap heap. The owner, hailing from Athens, put a little too much pep into his early morning drive and overcooked a curve. The silver lining here is what one could do with that intact powertrain: Ferrari-powered sand rail? One hell of a shifter kart?

Perhaps we should expand the spectrum of our Save the Enzos campaign to include all exclusive exotics, what with all the news of totaled Maseratis, Porsche Gemballa Mirage GTs and Godzillas. [WreckedExotics]

Will Nissan power the city of the future?

A Nissan Cube EV in San Diego

A Nissan Cube EV in San Diego

I can imagine a day when people in a futuristic city busily buzz through town in silent electric vehicles - some on their way to work, others heading to the grocery store, and some zipping to the mall to buy more silver jumpsuits (which we’ll all be wearing by the time this day comes).

Since it seems everyone is developing an electric vehicle (EV) or hyping up their gas-electric hybrids these days, I can only assume we’ll be led into a future where the EV is mainstream and gas-powered cars are as outdated as steam locomotives.

But while so many carmakers seem to be working on electric vehicles, very few are working on places to charge them.

Enter Nissan, who is in a partnership to turn San Diego into this city of the future.

Okay, that’s a little bit of a stretch of the imagination, but Nissan is partnering with San Diego Gas and Electric to develop and promote an EV charging network in San Diego.

The automaker will help the power company acquire 100 electric vehicles and will work with agencies and city departments to add infrastructure that will include 220-volt charging stations and the required surge protectors that will make San Diego plug-in ready.

Nissan also said they will work with the city to find locations that can accommodate 440-volt fast-charging stations (imagine the warning label on that outlet!). A fast-charging station can recharge the battery of Nissan’s EV in 26 minutes - ample time to run into the grocery store and come back to a fully charged car.

Perhaps my vision of a futuristic city of electric vehicles isn’t quite as far away as I once thought. If San Diego is any indication, maybe it’s time for us all to look into buying those silver jumpsuits.

Assuming it was affordable, would you own an electric car if you could find ample places to charge it?

Did your car brand win one of these prestigious awards?

BMW: Prestigious or cool?

BMW: Prestigious or cool?

You can finally rest easy, because Kelley Blue Book has released its 2009 Brand Image Awards.

If you’re like me, you lie awake at night wondering what image your car projects to your family, friends, and co-workers.

You ask yourself questions such as, “Am I driving the most rugged truck?” “Is my car the coolest one on the block?” And, “I sure hope my car shows my friends that I appreciate a good value. But what if it doesn’t?”

If you drive a Toyota, you can relax knowing that everyone you know has labeled you as a value hunter who loves your family. In addition to taking home KBB’s Best Value Brand award, Toyota also snagged Most Family Friendly Brand.

Any Dodge or Chevy truck owners out there? I’m sorry to tell you that you don’t have the truck perceived as the most rugged. You might as well be driving a Tonka if you don’t have a Ford parked in your driveway. Of the 12,000 people surveyed for this study, Ford is perceived as the Most Rugged Truck Brand.

caddy-inside

Award-winning Cadillac interior

For those of you hoping you can have the Coolest Brand, the Best Performance Brand, and Best Luxury Exterior Brand all in one, you’re in luck if you own a BMW! If you own a Cadillac, you’ll have to settle for knowing people perceive your ride as the brand with the Best Interior Design. If that’s a little too low on the testosterone scale for you, this won’t help: Cadillac is also perceived as the Most Comfortable Brand. So if you’re planning a long road trip and want a comfy ride with a pleasing color palate, you might want to hang on to that CTS.

Mercedes owners can revel in the fact that their cars are perceived as the Best Prestige Brand. Apparently you should never confuse “prestige” with “cool,” but I’m pretty sure only the good folks over at KBB know exactly what the difference is.

One award category remains: Best Exterior Design Brand-Non Luxury. Mazda drivers: I’m sorry to say you don’t drive a car perceived as having the best exterior design. Neither do you Saturn drivers. Or you, Chevy owners. If you drive a Nissan, though, congratulations on being the envy of the neighborhood!

What do you think of Kelley Blue Book’s 2009 Brand Image Awards?

Build your own Camaro!

build-your-own-camaro

With all the hype about all-new muscle cars, I was excited to find an official “build your own” Camaro site this morning.

I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief as Chevy finally begins the process of getting Camaros into the hands of their waiting public! We even have some readers who have ordered their own Camaro, so they should be especially excited because this means delivery can’t be far away.

Chevy expects about 65% of Camaro sales to be of the V6 variety. With more horsepower than many past V8s, a highway EPA rating of 29 mpg and a price starting under $23K, that will probably be true.

Still, when I configured mine I ended up with a $34,000 black SS with 426 horsepower and a 245-watt stereo system. I couldn’t help myself.

Build one for yourself here, and let us know what you ended up with! If you’ve already ordered one, how did you configure it?

Smart Really Coming to U.S. in 2008

    Smartfortwo_2

We don’t really believe it, but it seems the Smart brand actually is bringing its next generation ForTwo to the U.S. Last week, the presidents of Smart and the United Auto Group agreed on all the specifics to distribute the Smart brand in the U.S. The two signed an agreement making it all official, and even stated that Smarts will go on sale here in early 2008.

Smart is saying the next ForTwo is “absolutely the right car in the right place at the right time.” However, we’re seeing interest in new subcompacts dwindle along with gas prices and don’t think the Smart will be as alluring as the new Mini Cooper was when it debuted in the U.S. What do you think? Will Smart boom or bust in the States?

Land Rover LRX: Round Two in British Ugliness Sweepstakes

_land-rover-lrx-concept-1-lgtgriffith just showed us a photo of the Audi R8, and no one could deny that’s a gorgeous car, even if the Germans don’t win many design awards. But when it comes to SUVs, our British friends just don’t seem to get it. We just saw them produce a beastly monstrosity in the new Aston Martin Lagonda. Now here they come again with the new Range Rover LRX. Click on photo to get the full impact.

As I said about the Kia Soul Sport, this thing looks like someone stepped on it. What’s the deal about squashed-down rear quarters? Is that a new styling trend, or are they trying to sell us rear-view cameras because the vision’s so bad? Jalopnik says it may come in as a five-door and “carry a taller roof line.” One would hope so.

And all those front-end styling tricks, sculpted panels and flow lines. What happened to simple, form-and-function cars? Land Rover’s design director Gerry McGovern says, “This vehicle has its own unique personality. It’s very dramatic and its very youthful.”

This is really tiresome fluff, Gerry, especially when I read the votes of confidence some folks have expressed in your company via comments on that Jalopnik post:

As a previous owner of a Land Rover, what I appreciate most about them is that you often sell them with relatively low mileage for the year. This is often due to the fact that they spend more time on a lift, than on the road, but all in all it is still a benefit.

    and

As a Range Rover owner and Land Rover enthusiast I can say I expect nothing from this concept. I saw the Stormer with all it’s amazingness, and it became that anesthesia on wheels that is the RR Sport.

Tell us about your Land Rover experiences. Are you friend or foe?

2009 Honda Element Revealed, Priced Starting At $20,175 [Honda Element]

Honda's entry in the box-on-wheels category, the Element, has been redesigned for 2009, now wearing the Pilot-style family grille and missing some of its black side body cladding. The price of admission for a 2WD LX Element starts at $20,175, or you can plunk down $25,185 if you prefer the EX with a sat-nav head unit. There's also a "sportier" SC model that gets some aero tweaks yet somehow manages to lose 2 MPG city and highway in the process, despite using the same 2.4-liter four-cylinder as the other models. Press release from Honda after the jump.

Restyled 2009 Honda Element Offers New High-tech, Functional Features

Available features now include a navigation system, a removable storage cooler and an improved overhead storage console on select models

The restyled 2009 Honda Element entry-level SUV builds on its spacious and versatile character by adding a more chiseled exterior appearance and a refreshed interior design with an expanded selection of available high-tech and functional features. Manufacturer Suggested Retail Pricing (MSRP1) starts at $20,175 for the 2009 Element 2WD LX, plus a destination and handling charge of $670.

For 2009, Honda has enhanced each of the three unique Element styles that range from the rugged and simple Element LX, to the more refined Element EX, to the sporty Element SC. Available new features on the Element EX and SC include the Honda Satellite-linked Navigation System2 with Voice Activation and a rearview camera (automatic transmission-equipped vehicles only); USB digital media connectivity; and improved overhead console storage areas with modular compartments.

Significant exterior styling changes include a new front grille and bumper design, restyled front fenders (now metal, previously composite material), a new hood design, squared wheel arches, and new headlight and taillight configurations.

"The Element's key strength is a spacious, versatile and rugged interior that adapts quickly and conveniently to people and cargo," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "For 2009, the enhancements strengthen the totally unique original concept with more refinement and functionality."

New interior changes include new, brighter color schemes with titanium-look side linings, new fabric patterns, and revised switchgear designs and meter graphics. A restyled low-profile center console is standard on the Element LX.

The Element EX adds a new convertible center console with a removable cooler/storage box while the Element SC retains its exclusive center console. For additional storage, the Element EX and SC are equipped with a modular three-compartment overhead console based on the Railport™ Vehicle Personalization System, expanding the vehicle's hidden storage versatility compared to the previous version. The new overhead console includes two large storage bins that can accommodate CD cases and similar items and a rear storage area for sunglasses.

The 2.4-liter i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine is available with either a standard 5-speed manual transmission or an available 5-speed automatic transmission. Real Time 4WD™, available on the Element LX and EX, enhances all-weather traction. The Element LX and EX continue to be available in two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations, while the sport-tuned Element SC continues to be available exclusively in two-wheel-drive. EPA city/highway fuel economy ratings3 range from 20/25 for two-wheel-drive models with an automatic transmission to 18/23 for manual transmission models with either two-wheel-drive or Real Time 4WD.

Versatile and Accommodating Interior with Available High-tech Features
The interior provides seating for four people along with a cargo area that quickly adapts to large items with its flip-up rear seats that fold flat, fold up and to the side, or can be removed altogether (64-plus seating arrangements). The Element LX and EX have a water resistant urethane-coated utility floor that quickly wipes down and seat fabric that resists moisture; the Element SC has a carpeted passenger area. Air conditioning with micron air filtration is standard on all models.

The Element LX has a 4-speaker AM/FM audio system with a CD player. The Element EX and SC feature a 270-watt high-output audio system, an AM/FM tuner, CD player with MP3/WMA™4 capability, auxiliary audio input for MP3 players or other audio devices, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, seven speakers including a dynamic linear phase 6.5-inch subwoofer (located in the bottom center of the instrument panel). XM® Satellite Radio5 is standard on the Element EX and SC.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System becomes an available feature for 2009 on the Element EX and SC (automatic transmission models only), and includes a rear backup camera and a USB audio interface6. The navigation system features a 6.5-inch motorized display that opens and closes for access to an internal single-disc CD player and a digital audio card reader that can play MP3 and WMA® files from CompactFlash® cards. The navigation system contains more than 7 million points of interest and can control the audio system. The voice recognition is capable of recognizing and entering numbers, street names and cities.

Numerous storage bins and beverage holders provide places for cell phones, CDs and super-size drinks. Available storage areas include: a large three-bin tray above the glove box (ideal for mobile phones and portable music players); a modular 3-compartment overhead storage bin (EX, SC); seat back storage (EX, SC); six hooks for strapping down bikes or other bulky gear; and door storage pockets on all four doors.

Exclusive Element SC interior appointments include passenger-area carpeting, a center console with storage, piano black trim pieces and unique fabrics and patterns. The center console provides an enclosed storage area in the vehicle and integrates the auxiliary audio input jack and two beverage holders. Meter styling color on all Element SC models is copper-hue, replacing the blue backlit illumination on the other models.

Restyled Exterior with Stronger Character Lines
For 2009, exterior styling changes to the front of the vehicle provide a more substantial and bolder look. Changes to the front fascia and side profile involve a new hood line that follows a continuously horizontal plane extending from the A-pillar to the front of the vehicle. The new design replaces the downward slope that began mid-fender on the previous models and results in a more vertical front appearance. Steel front fenders replace the composite body panels on all models (the rear fenders retain composite construction). The new grille design provides a consistent appearance similar to other Honda truck models. The rear skylight, previously exclusive to Elements equipped with RealTime 4WD, has been discontinued.

The Element SC provides an exclusive appearance with street custom-inspired styling with a lowered stance and exclusive premium features. The Element SC's exterior styling exhibits a performance-oriented attitude with a monochromatic color scheme and exclusive features that include custom front and rear painted bumpers, large alloy wheels, custom grille, and a lowered stance. The lowered stance is achieved by lowering the ride height and by using uniquely shaped painted side sills and slimmer roof moldings.

    Refined Chassis Design
The Element's fully independent suspension uses a front MacPherson strut design and a rear compact double wishbone design for responsive handling and a comfortable ride. A 101.4-inch wheelbase contributes to a compact exterior size and an ultra-tight turning diameter of 34.9-feet (36.9-feet, Element SC) provides maneuverability in tight places.

Chassis safety highlights include Vehicle Stability Assist (also known as Electronic Stability Control) and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. Vehicle Stability Assist helps sense oversteer and understeer, and can adjust brake pressure at each wheel and/or reduce engine power to help restore the driver's intended course. Electronic Brake Distribution helps to balance braking forces depending on dynamic loading. Brake Assist helps apply full braking force in some emergency braking situations. A Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) alerts the driver when tire pressure is significantly under-inflated.

Element LX and EX models are equipped with 16-inch wheels (steel on LX, alloy on EX) with all-season P215/70R16 tires. Additional LX and EX standard features include power rack-and-pinion steering and front and rear stabilizer bars (30.0x4.5 mm tubular front / 21.0 mm solid rear). The Element SC adds 18-inch alloy wheels, P225/55R18 tires, exclusive spring and damper tuning (30 percent firmer), a lowered ride height (approximately 0.7 inches) and increased rear stabilizer bar size (25.0 mm, solid). Compared to Element LX and EX, the solid front stabilizer bar is 25 percent stiffer and the rear stabilizer bar is 30 percent stiffer. The steering rack also provides a 6 percent faster ratio (2.94:1 compared to 3.26:1).

    Efficient Powertrain
An all-aluminum, 2.4-liter, DOHC i-VTEC engine produces 166-horsepower at 5800 rpm and 161 lb-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. The Element's i-VTEC system combines Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC®) and a cam position-adjusting Variable Timing Control (VTC) system to enhance low rpm torque while extending high rpm horsepower. The result is a broad torque curve that starts early at low RPM's while still delivering high-RPM horsepower.

The five-speed manual transmission features a lightweight and rigid aluminum die-cast housing. Multi-cone synchronizers used on first through fourth gears contribute to a smooth, fluid shift feel while reducing throw distances. Inside, the instrument panel- mounted shift lever facilitates quick, direct gear changes. The five-speed automatic transmission (available) delivers exceptional smoothness, economy and intuitive shift points. Grade Logic Control minimizes "gear hunting" on hilly roads.

Available on Element LX and EX, the Real Time 4WD system aids traction in snow, rain and sand. Real Time 4WD sends power to the rear wheels when the front wheels experience traction loss.

The vehicle maintenance schedule is calculated by the Maintenance Minder™7 system. Maintenance Minder automatically indicates when to have standard service performed based on actual driving conditions (tracked by the ECU) and minimizes the guesswork in determining standard or severe use conditions for maintenance interval purposes. The display indicates when to change the oil, air filter, transmission fluid, spark plugs or coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires. The Element requires no scheduled tune-ups for 100K+/- Miles.

    Honda Safety
The Element is equipped with dual-stage, dual-threshold supplemental restraint system (SRS) airbags for the driver and front passenger. The airbags are designed to minimize the potential for airbag injury while providing head and chest protection for the occupants in the event of a frontal collision. The front airbag system features front passenger seat weight sensors and a driver seat position sensor designed to further enhance occupant protection.

Seat-mounted front side airbags help safeguard the driver and front passenger from side-impact injury. An innovative Occupant Position Detection System is used to assure that the passenger's side airbag has a clear path for deployment. In the event that a child (or a small-statured adult) leans into the deployment path of the side airbag, a seven-segment "antenna" system built within the seat back signals this condition to an electronic control unit (ECU) and the passenger's side airbag is switched off.

Both rows of occupants are protected by Honda's Side Curtain Airbag with rollover sensor system. The side curtain airbags deploy from modules in the headliner in the event of a sufficient side impact, providing a significant level of head protection in the window area. In the unlikely event of a rollover, a roll rate sensor and multiple G-force sensors determine the rate of roll and deploy the side curtain airbags accordingly.

Both front seat belts have automatic tensioners and load limiters that work together to help protect the driver and front passenger in a collision. A LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child-seat mounting system is standard for the two rear seat positions, allowing two outboard child seats to be installed. For pedestrian injury mitigation, design features in the front of the vehicle can help absorb energy in the event of a collision with a pedestrian to help minimize injury. New for 2009, active front seat head restraints have been designed to help reduce the severity of neck injuries in the event of a rear impact.

Firefly Challenges the Lithium Ion as the Battery of Tomorrow

The electronics industry and the hybrid auto makers have been working franticly on improving the Lithium batteries to improve their charge and to keep them cool. The hybrid markets future seems to be hinging on the Lithium Ion batteries success and potential affordability. But there is still hope for the Lead Acid battery yet.

Firefly Energy is working on a new recipe for the Lead Acid Battery that may bring new life to those heavy batteries of today. Their idea is to replace the Lead in the battery with a Carbon Graphite Foam. The result is a lighter and smaller battery with a longer lifespan. While the Carbon Graphite battery may still cost more than its Lead Acid cousin it should still cost considerably less than the Lithium Ion and the Nickel battery.

There are certain technologies whose use, although wasteful and polluting (ie. the cumbustion engine), will still be in use decades from now. Despite the yearning for electric cars the gasoline engines in the cars of today and yesterday are still going to be around and will need to be fed. Alternatives like ethanol and bio-diesel and the conversion kits to make them usable in older machines may help extend the lives of our beloved combustion engine. So may be the future of the Acid battery. As 90% of all Lead Acid batteries in the U.S. are recycled those batteries returning to the market can be fitted with their Carbon Graphite replacements for a lengthy reincarnation.

The future is now and the next evolution of the Automotive Revolution is just getting charged up (a pun filled day indeed).

The merger of Toyota and Subaru?

    toyobaru

    Get ready for Toyobaru!

No, this isn’t an actual merger of the two companies, but a rare alliance to co-develop a rear-wheel-drive 220-horsepower sport coupe. Though recent rumors have surfaced saying the project has been delayed, our friends at Edmunds Inside Line say otherwise

Based on a revised version of Subaru’s Impreza platform, the new coupe will use Subie’s naturally aspirated 2.0-liter boxer engine mated to the 6-speed manual transmission used in the WRX STI.

So what’s Toyota’s contribution to this venture? Mostly product development and quality control. Plus they get a version of the new coupe that will have its own exterior styling. Who would ever have thought you could buy a Toyota coupe made with Subaru parts? It proves that in this age of automotive uncertainty, anything is possible!

Neither of the coupes have official names yet, but the Toyota version will be sold only in Japan, while the Subaru version will be offered to the rest of the world. Pricing should come in around $20,000, providing a fairly cheap coupe sure to be a hit with the tuner crowd and those who relish in the performance of RWD.

The thing is, Subaru has spent a lot of money building a brand around the fact that all of their vehicles have all-wheel drive. While a RWD coupe is good for the performance side of Subaru, I question what it will do to their all-weather driveability status.

The new coupes are on schedule for a 2011 release, and should be something to really look forward to!

What do you think of a Toyota/Subaru alliance?

Jetta TDI demos turn up at dealers, lots of orders coming in

The initial batch of Volkswagen Jetta TDIs have started to appear at Volkswagen dealers around the country and at least one dealer in Virginia is reporting a lot of interest. Jay Pichardo of Greenbrier Volkswagen posted a photo of the first demo vehicle and some initial stats. In the first 24 hours, thirteen people took the car out for test drives and ten people put down deposits on the new fifty-state legal diesel. According to Pichardo, the car has averaged 49mpg over the first 120 miles. Interestingly the car is emblazoned with graphics that emphasize the fact that the car is not a concept. We're waiting patiently for Volkswagen to send a Jetta over to the ABG Garage for our own evaluation of real world mileage. Keith, you know where to reach me.

VW Scirocco Spotted Testing in America

    VW scIROCco

A cloaked test model of the 2009 VW Scirocco was observed going through heat tests in America just recently. Hidden beneath the black drapes auto manufacturers use to disguise their upcoming designs the distinct grille and headlights of the Scirocco could still be made out.

VW SciroccoWhile hopes are high for some that Scirocco will find a place amongst the GTI and R32 in American dealerships it could be a tough sell for VW. Despite the growing appeal of smaller yet exciting hatchbacks and sedans to both customers and (now) car companies it seems unlikely that one company would attempt to squeeze so many models into such a compact market. Europe however will be seeing the Scirocco in show rooms as a 2009 model as Americans will be watching footage of those reviews on YouTube and the like.

What is most pleasing about the Scirocco and the resurgence of the small car are the chances the auto makers are making in the design of them. The Mini Cooper took a chance on revamping a model that enjoyed decades of success in Europe, so that was not as much of a stretch. But when you look at the Volvo C30, Audi A3, VW Scirocco and BMW 1-series hatchback you have to be a little pleased to see designers able to stretch their legs some on these smaller packages. It would be the equivalent of Hollywood using writers again instead of relying on Reality based programs to fill the networks void for creativity.
