UPDATE (19.June 2009): Aaaand, it passed. Also, check out Autoweek’s story on the bill passing through Congress. Note in particular the following:
[Representative Betty] Sutton plans to try to resurrect the measure as a longer-term program in the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, she said.
This is the problem that arises with establishing a precedent like this. Now that there’s actually going to be an official program dedicated to cash for clunkers, our government will be loath to dissolve it. Sure, it’s temporary now, but it wouldn’t take much to make it permanent.
