Ex-Cowboys' 1991 BMW 850Ci one-off for sale in Texas

Click above the view a gallery of this custom convertible BMW 850i

Long before the retro-licious Z8 and the modern 6 Series, BMW's range-topping sport coupe was the 8-Series. Characterized by its distinctive shark nose and available with a choice of eight- or 12-cylinder engines, the 8-Series was sadly never offered as a convertible. But it would have made a smart-looking roadster, as one customer was evidently determined to discover.

Commissioned by Erik Williams, offensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys back in their glory days, this one-of-a-kind 1991 BMW 850i convertible is now up for sale by a dealer in New Braunfels, Texas. Craftsmanship of the folding soft-top, as you can see from the images in the gallery below, may not be up to world-class standards, but for a unique V12-powered German cabrio, the $25,900 asking price is at least accessible.

MINI Cooper “Crisis” Not Really News

According to MINI division vice president, Jim McDowell, MINI Cooper is all out of cars. Production rates have proved unable to match consumer demand and as a result, dealer inventory has been reduced to primarily pre-ordered vehicles. The bulk of the MINI Cooper’s success with North American sales can probably be attributed to it’s above industry-average gas mileage of a combined 32 mpg.

With fuel prices still high and consumer response favorable, MINI is eager to cash-in with plans to kick production into high gear come 2009. In addition to expanding its North American dealer network, MINI is also considering the possibility of basing manufacturing plants in “lower-cost countries.” Also to be considered for 2009 Cooper Models: “Sports Package” consisting of free soccer balls (sewn in the same sweatshop as the bucket seats).

BMW and Mercedes Joining Forces

BMW and Mercedes are deadlocked in discussions about joining forces to improve automotive technology in Europe according to Motor Authority.

Arch-rivals BMW and Daimler are still locked in talks with latest discussions surrounding topics on component sharing and joint-research of new powertrain technologies. Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche has confirmed the two carmakers are in fact discussing the potential for component sharing, alluding to the fact new emissions laws are forcing manufacturers to develop expensive new technologies to help reduce emissions and fuel consumption levels.

Ironically this is like McDonald’s and Burger King joining forces to develop a better burger.

BMW Z9 could be an Audi R8 competitor… if built

BMW C S Concept - Z9

BMW does not seem all too interested in sharing their market with Audi. They have their 1-Series aimed at countering Audi’s A1 concept and A3. They have their 335xi AWDtargeted at competing against Audi’s Quattro models. Now BMW appears tired of listening to all the Audi R8 hoop-la. The Z9 will be designated as BMW’s Heavy Weight, high speed combatant against the Iron Man auto of Audi.

To give the Z9 its competitive drive BMW plans to utilize a modified version of the V10 found in the M5 and M6 models. With a target output of 550 horsepower the Z9 will have the muscle to stand up against the R8, but will it have the sleek elegance demonstrated by the Audi super car? (more…)
