In response to crushing fuel prices, consumers are obviously getting either a hell of a lot more resourceful or flat-out desperate. According to Shell, the newest breed of gas-station thieves come armed with Reynolds Wrap. Following a string of similar, more successful attempts along the West Coast, an Illinois resident tried his own hand at beating the system on Monday.
According to reports, a suspicious-looking man was spotted on the roof of a Tinley Park, Illinois Shell station at around 9:30pm. Apparently, the man had scaled the wall to access the roof in order to implement the newest gas-saving technique of wrapping aluminum foil around the satellite receiver.
Accordingly, aluminum foil strategically placed on the satellite effectively disables the transmitters. When the transmitters are disabled, fuel purchases via credit card are prevented from being automatically processed. Thus, service station clerks must manually record credit card transactions and submit transactions the next business day – a time consuming process that, in theory, enables the customer to illegally use invalid credit cards as sufficient payment.
